The visible substance coming from the smokestacks is mostly steam, however the plants emitted 12 regulated toxic substances in 2001, totaling 1.8 million pounds, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. Most of the regulated emissions are in the form of hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid. Other regulated toxic pollutants emitted include lead, mercury and other metals.
